{"id":1040008996,"date":"2025-12-01T14:38:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T14:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/athleticsweekly.com\/?p=1040008996"},"modified":"2025-12-08T20:45:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T20:45:00","slug":"steve-cram-and-steve-smith-help-search-for-the-next-generation-of-young-athletes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/athleticsweekly.com\/news\/steve-cram-and-steve-smith-help-search-for-the-next-generation-of-young-athletes-1040008996\/","title":{"rendered":"Steve Cram and Steve Smith help search for the next generation of young athletes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British Olympians are co-chairing a brain-storming group of athletes and coaches who aim to create a strategy to attract \u2013 and retain \u2013 young athletes in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Words and phrases like 'recruitment and retention of young athletes' will be familiar and perhaps tired concepts to older athletes and coaches. But the quest to find new runners, jumpers and throwers is never-ending.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years and particularly since the pandemic, the number of youngsters who are taking up athletics and maintaining an interest into their late teens and 20s seems to be dwindling.<\/p>\n<p>So in order to combat this, supermiler Steve Cram and high jump legend Steve Smith have been quietly working behind the scenes in recent months as co-chairs of an independent selection of people called the Vision Group which is attempting to find some solutions to the problem in collaboration with the home country athletics associations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.<\/p><div class=\"ad-alignnone\"><div class=\"ad-row\">\n<div id=\"ad-1040000351\" class=\"ad-970x250 adsanity-970x250 alignnone adsanity-alignnone\"\n><div class=\"adsanity-inner\">\n\n<div id=snack-incontent-wide-1 > <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cram says: \"I know people will say 'we've been here before and I wasn't listened to'. So please don't have that attitude because that was a little bit 'me'.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\"I thought 'really, do we have to go through this again?' But I care so much about our sport and I know that most of you are exactly the same and because of that I believe we should give this a bit of a shot.\"<\/p>\n<p>He adds: \"\"We've got a good group of people together who have come up with some thoughts and ideas. They also want to find out why 'lapsed athletes' left athletics and also why non-athletes have chosen other sports instead of athletics.<\/p><div class=\"ad-alignnone\"><div class=\"ad-row\">\n<div id=\"ad-1040000352\" class=\"ad-970x250 adsanity-970x250 alignnone adsanity-alignnone\"\n><div class=\"adsanity-inner\">\n\n<div id=snack-incontent-wide-3> <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">The research already has found out that for many young athletes it hasn't so much been a case of 'quitting' athletics but simply finding a 'better fit' or something they enjoyed more than athletics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They have also found that young people want athletics to feel:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2022 More social, less solitary<br \/>\n\u2022 More flexible, less all-or-nothing<br \/>\n\u2022 More inclusive, less intimidating<br \/>\n\u2022 More fun but (still) serious when it matters<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Athletics has been described by youngsters in the research as intimidating and only for \u2018talented\u2019, or too serious and hard to access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Some early recommendations from the project include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Start with open doors<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Create low-pressure, visible entry points that feel welcoming \u2014 not selective or intimidating<br \/>\n\u2022 Re-think how, where and by whom children and teens first experience the sport<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Offer formats that flex with real life<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Build options that fit around exams, work and wellbeing<br \/>\n\u2022 Let teens step in and out without guilt and return when ready<br \/>\n\u2022 Support different levels of commitment, from casual enjoyment to serious progression<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Rethink what competition can be<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Design events with energy, music and shared moments, not just results<br \/>\n\u2022 Celebrate progress, resilience and effort, alongside elite achievement<br \/>\n\u2022 Give space for those chasing big goals, but don\u2019t let that be the only story<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Let young people help shape it<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Involve teens in co-creating formats, events and club culture<br \/>\n\u2022 Use vision groups to make sure the sport feels relevant, inclusive and worth returning to<\/p>\n<p>The group have also come up with six main principles so far, which are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inclusive and Accessible for All<\/li>\n<li>Wellbeing and Personal Growth First<\/li>\n<li>Flexible and Responsive Formats<\/li>\n<li>Social Connection and Belonging<\/li>\n<li>Youth Voice and Ownership<\/li>\n<li>One Team: Joined-Up Delivery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They also have an early list of five visions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Local and regional collaboration with new athletics hubs<\/strong> \u2013 Transforming the participation landscape into inclusive, high-quality clusters of activity with local reach and national impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 Competition culture<\/strong> \u2013 Prioritisation of flexible, inclusive, and progressive competition formats that reflect young people\u2019s lives and motivations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 Blended and digital pathways<\/strong> \u2013 Harnessing technology to complement in-person participation, track progress, and increase accessibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 Well being and belonging at the core<\/strong> \u2013 Repositioning the wider perception of athletics as being grounded in belonging, identity, supporting good mental health and long-term engagement \u2014 not just performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5 Athletics as the foundation of all sports<\/strong> \u2013 Embedding run, jump, and throw skills into the wider sporting ecosystem as the entry point for every young athlete and recognising that athletes can and should be participating in other sports.<\/p>\n<p>In a video message to the sport, Cram says the project has a certain amount of urgency and cannot be allowed to drag on. The next stage is for further people to come forward to be a part of the discussion.
