{"id":1040009989,"date":"2026-02-19T21:56:24","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T21:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/athleticsweekly.com\/?p=1040009989"},"modified":"2026-02-20T08:27:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T08:27:40","slug":"keely-hodgkinson-smashes-world-indoor-800m-record-in-lievin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/athleticsweekly.com\/news\/keely-hodgkinson-smashes-world-indoor-800m-record-in-lievin-1040009989\/","title":{"rendered":"Keely Hodgkinson smashes world indoor 800m record in Li\u00e9vin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Briton runs 1:54.87 to take almost a second off Jolanda \u010ceplak's mark from 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Keely Hodgkinson fulfilled her destiny when she smashed Jolanda \u010ceplak's world record of 1:55.82 with 1:54.87 at the World Indoor Tour Gold in Li\u00e9vin on Thursday (Feb 19).<\/p>\n<p>The 23-year-old was born on the same day \u2013 March 3, 2002 \u2013 that \u010ceplak set the mark and has felt for a while that it is her fate to claim the record.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/athleticsweekly.com\/news\/keely-hodgkinson-runs-british-indoor-800m-record-of-156-33-1040009934\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improving her own British record to 1:56.33 last weekend<\/a> with such ease in Birmingham, she looked in the shape of her life and ripped the record apart during a masterclass of 800m running in the French town.<\/p><div class=\"ad-alignnone\"><div class=\"ad-row\">\n<div id=\"ad-1040000351\" class=\"ad-970x250 adsanity-970x250 alignnone adsanity-alignnone\"\n><div class=\"adsanity-inner\">\n\n<div id=snack-incontent-wide-1 > <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>As we also predicted in <a href=\"https:\/\/athleticsweekly.com\/news\/meetings\/keely-hodgkinson-targets-ceplaks-world-indoor-800m-record-in-lievin-1040009975\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our preview for the meeting<\/a>, \u010ceplak's record has been living on borrowed time and looked almost certain to fall in Li\u00e9vin. The big question, though, was how much could Hodgkinson slice off the record?<\/p>\n<p>Pacemaker Anna Gryc led through 200m in 26.50 with Hodgkinson hot on her heels in 26.80 and Audrey Werro of Switzerland close behind. Her 100m splits were: 13.52, 13.28, 14.50, 14.71, 14.54, 14.51, 14.61 before slowing to 15.20 in the final stretch.<\/p><div class=\"ad-alignnone\"><div class=\"ad-row\">\n<div id=\"ad-1040000349\" class=\"ad-970x250 adsanity-970x250 alignnone adsanity-alignnone\"\n><div class=\"adsanity-inner\">\n\n<div id=snack-incontent-wide-2> <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Hodgkinson is the only British woman to currently hold an athletics world record. She has now added the indoor 800m record to her world indoor 600m record, although three British men (Jonathan Edwards, triple jump; Mo Farah, one hour run; Elliot Giles, road mile) also hold world records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\"I have been very vocal in the past about wanting to get it,\" said Hodgkinson last weekend. \"I feel like it is my record to break. We'll give it a good go.\"<\/p>\n<p>\u010ceplak set the record at the European Indoor Championships in Vienna after a close duel with Stefanie Graf from the host nation Austria. Given this, many fans regarded Hodgkinson as the unofficial world record-holder even prior to Thursday's race.<\/p><div class=\"ad-alignnone\"><div class=\"ad-row\">\n<div id=\"ad-1040000352\" class=\"ad-970x250 adsanity-970x250 alignnone adsanity-alignnone\"\n><div class=\"adsanity-inner\">\n\n<div id=snack-incontent-wide-3> <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Coincidentally, Jenny Meadows, who now coaches Hodgkinson with her husband Trevor Painter, also raced the 800m at the 2002 European Indoors but did not finish her heat after being clipped at around the 400m mark.
